TIMELINE

How It Works

Design

First things first, we discuss which facility is packaging for you and what your bagging facility is capable of doing. We then prepare a printing template based on your product fill, your facilities requirements and your finished product expectations. Using this template, your design group prepares your artwork in accordance with the printing template and then submits it to Zion Packaging for conversion. Zion performs prepress and applies any need distortion to the artwork. We then provide you with a high-quality final proof for approval. It is then up to you to either return any changes to our design department for implementation or you authorize production and send a PO.

Cylinder Engraving

After you have approved the artwork, we release for cylinder creation. For gravure printing, our cylinder maker will take metal cores and affix a copper layer to it. They will then laser engrave or acid etch the cylinder as required by the artwork.

Printing

After the printing cylinders are created, they are transferred to the printing presses and printing begins. For gravure printing, the presses can run at speeds of around 125000 pieces per hour. For digital printing, the speed is so slow it is reminiscent of a dialup connection.

Slitting, Seaming & Converting

After the film is printed it is transferred to a slitting machine which cut the big role into single item rolls. After that completes, the film is bonded and laminated with other materials to meet the storage requirements of your products.

Shipping and Storage

Once everything gets boxed up, your bags will then go on a truck, a train, a boat or plane. We offer storage for the effective life of the bags at our Corona facility. Alternatively, we can ship to your facility or directly to your contract packager.

Design Guidelines

Design Rules
& Breakdown

Clear guidelines to ensure your designs meet production standards. Follow these steps to create flawless, print-ready artwork every time.

Supplying Artwork

Provide high-resolution artwork files in the required format (PDF, AI, or EPS) with all layers intact. This ensures accurate reproduction and seamless processing.

Supplying Images

Images must be at least 300 DPI at 100% of the final size. Ensure all linked images are embedded in your file to avoid missing assets during production.

Type Size and Font Requirements

Use fonts no smaller than 6pt for legibility. Outline all text to avoid font compatibility issues, or include font files with your submission.

Converting Copy to Outlines

Convert all text to outlines before submission to ensure the font appearance remains consistent, even if the original font isn’t installed on our system.

Die Lines and Copy Placement

Place all artwork, text, and logos within the die line template provided. Keep key elements within the safe zone to avoid being cut off during trimming.

Setting Barcodes

Barcodes should be clear, high-contrast, and placed in a location free of folds or seams. Test the barcode for scannability before submission.

Trap

Add a trapping allowance to avoid gaps between colors during printing. This ensures colors overlap slightly for clean edges.

Distortion

Our computer modeling predicts and corrects package distortion, ensuring your design looks perfect on the shelf regardless of container shape.

Running Combos and/or Common Plates

Combining designs or using common plates can optimize costs and reduce waste. Discuss with our team if this is suitable for your project.

PDF, Epson Print Proofs, and On-Press First Articles

We provide digital proofs for approval, Epson print proofs for color accuracy, and on-press samples to confirm the final output before full production.

Changes to Artwork

All changes after file submission may incur additional fees or delays. Ensure all files are final before submission to minimize disruptions.
